DR. SOMMER STARR P.H.D.
biogeochemistry
I’m currently pursuing a PhD with Dr. Rob Spencer at Florida State University, where my research focuses on studying C dynamics in high-latitude systems. I’m currently an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and a student mentor with CERF’s Rising TIDES program.
I’m interested in biogeochemistry and microbial ecology in Arctic wetlands, as well as how scientific data can be applied to make the best choices for shareholders and the environment in public policy making.
I did my master’s degree in the Mortazavi biogeochemistry lab (link: http://mortazavilab.ua.edu/) studying the drivers of nitrogen cycling in artificial and natural coastal wetlands as part of the ongoing Collaborative Research in Marsh Soils, Organisms & Nutrients (CRIMSON: http://cherrylab.ua.edu/crimson-project.html) project at the University of Alabama. My thesis research focused on assessing the drivers of the return of nitrogen removal ability in constructed salt marshes.
